Liphook United 1 - 2 COMMON

02.04.2022 - Hampshire Premier Football League

Goalscorers: Ben White; Connor Underhill

There are no ‘pushovers’ in the Hampshire League at present and although the Liphook results column shows defeats to outnumber victories substantially they nevertheless ran Colden Common uncomfortably close.

A bumpy pitch was a challenge to the Commoners efforts to play their normal game but they put together sufficient to dominate the opening half.  That this did not translate into goals very nearly came back to haunt them.

In the early minutes both James Barnes and Aaron Blaxall fired warning shots of intention, both narrowly clearing the crossbar.  But it was the hosts who were presented with a gilt-edged chance resulting from a defensive howler.  Captain and talismanic striker Steve Harding was left in the clear with just the goalkeeper, Josh Hawkins, to beat but, uncharacteristically he spurned the opportunity, blazing high.

With twenty-one minutes on the clock Hawkins was to play a major part in the opening goal.  His long clearance saw Barnes win possession and fashion a shooting chance for BEN WHITE who made no mistake with an explosive twenty-yarder.

Shortly after, White unleashed an even more ferocious drive as Carl Steadman’s swirling free-kick was only half-cleared. This time Liphook custodian, Evan Hampshire, was able to block the shot on the goal line.

As the visitors pressed in search of further goals, White curled another shot wide and a good flowing move saw Joe Ryan race clear and cross for Leon Course whose effort fell not far wide. A t the other end George House made a superb run and crossed but Ryan Long failed to get a good contact.

Common began the second half much where they had left off.  A smart shot on the turn by Barnes struck an upright then, almost immediately, Ryan thundered against the crossbar.

Liphook began to make some useful sorties of their own.  Harding forced a good save from Hawkins then, on the hour, he saw another effort deflected wide. Harding took the resulting corner and Long headed an equaliser at the far post.

This sparked Common back to life and they scored what proved to be the winner in the sixty-seventh minute.  Great work from Joe Ryan enabled the ball to reach CONNOR UNDERHILL who finished emphatically with a fierce volley.  Coming off the bench and scoring a vital goal is becoming a habit for the precocious sixteen-year-old.

Another substitute who always leaves an impression, Ryan Lambert, came close to increasing the lead, shooting a fraction wide.

The hosts were to exert some pressure in the final minutes and it seemed like Déjà vu as another Harding corner found Long.  This time however, the ball was scrambled clear.

COMMON 4 - 2 Overton United

19.03.2022 - Hampshire Premier Football League

Goalscorers: Mike Douglas; Ryan Lambert; Joe Ryan; Dave Paskins

Common added to their recent run of victories but not without a scare.  In truth, they were never at their most fluent and possibly needed a two goal salvo from the opposition, in the second half, as a wake-up call.

Victory had seemed assured with goals either side of the quarter-hour mark.  First, a corner from Joe Ryan was touched in at the near post by Common MVP MIKE DOUGLAS, then RYAN LAMBERT was at his predatory best to exploit confusion in the Overton back-line and hook the ball home acrobatically from close range.

As the visitors hit back Grant Powell was unlucky to see a fierce drive from twenty yards deflected high and, in the culmination of a goalmouth scramble, Laurie Dwyer cleared a Liam Doran effort from the goal line.

JOE RYAN came close with a shot which passed narrowly over the crossbar but the Common wideman was rewarded two minutes into the second half making no mistake as the ball came back out from visiting goalkeeper Mindaugas Kuodys.

Overton began their recovery on 55-minutes.  Cole Oats got to the by-line and his low cross was swept by Chris Avery.  Avery added to his tally ten-minutes later. Amidst confusion in the host’s penalty area he aimed a clever chip to defeat Jon Webb who was caught off his line.

Their three-goal lead reduced to one, Common made changes and upped the ante.  Krysty Sullivan-Rose played a good ball in and Dwyer, at the back post, forced a good save from Kuodys.  The subsequent corner kick, from Sullivan-Rose, saw the Overton custodian in action again, blocking a header from Aaron Blaxall.

Common made the points safe some thirteen minutes from time.  Luke Turner sent Connor Underhill away and the youngster did well to cut inside and deliver a low centre which DAVE PASKINS converted with the help of an upright.

The relief was palpable as Common secured a victory which had begun to look as though it might get away.

Paulsgrove 1 - 3 COMMON

18.01.2020 - Hampshire Premier Football League

Goalscorers: Tom Richards; Brett Stanley (2)

By Nick Brown

The sheer number of quality players brought to The Club by our management team is beginning to defy belief.  Following a string of straight forward cup victories the return to league action was not going well, the ever-formidable Paulsgrove giving us a torrid time. Then, an hour into the match the latest starlet, Brett Stanley, crowned his debut, from the bench, with two high class strikes to settle the proceedings.

Common began the stronger and the first goalmouth action ensued ten minutes in when Dave Paskins won the ball and, following some slick inter-passing, Terry New stung the palms of the Paulsgrove custodian, Luke Shields.

As play switched to the opposite end Billy Butcher struck an upright then Mike Weatherall, in the Common goal, took out John Cripps who got up to slot home the resulting spot kick.

Cripps broke again but was off-target from a tight angle.  The visitors rallied and Shield blocked an effort from Tom Richards with an outstretched leg. TOM RICHARDS had better luck on 27 minutes equalising from the penalty spot after Shields had raced from his line, as his opposite number had done, found opposing player (Dave Paskins) not ball!

Common came close on the stroke of half-time, Ben White heading a swirling free kick from George Callard a fraction wide.  White came close again early in the second half, almost converting a chance fashioned by Carl Steadman.

The hosts were about to hit a ‘purple-patch’ however.  A fine move culminated in Paulsgrove substitute Craig Ralph seeing a fierce drive strike the inside of a post and rebound to safety.  Moulay Osman then fired wide following a goalmouth scramble and Weatherall thwarted another effort at full stretch.

Ralph was again denied by the woodwork, his inspired lob from all of 30 yards bouncing off the Common crossbar… at this point many of us might well have settled for a point but, on 57 minutes, the tide turned. Callard followed excellent work down the left with a deep cross which was headed with precision into the top corner by BRETT STANLEY who had positioned himself perfectly at the far post.

Paulsgrove became increasingly frustrated by a number of refereeing decisions that had not gone their way, while Common were able to close out the game when a second goal from STANLEY, ten minutes from the end, gave them breathing space.

Having received a return pass from George Callard, BRETT STANLEY drilled the ball into the bottom corner of Paulsgrove’s net.

An excellent result, born of adversity.  Paulsgrove boasts a passionate, vociferous crowd and a rugged, no-nonsense bunch of players which see’s many teams wilt in this environment.

It is to the credit of our boys that they did not.

Fleetlands 2 - 5 COMMON

21.12.2019 - Hampshire Premier Senior Cup, Quarter Final

Goalscorers: Terry New; Sam Adams (4)

By Ian Steele

On the first anniversary of manager Adam Pullinger's first game in charge of The Club (v Overton United, Dec 22nd 2018), Colden Common progressed to the last four of the HP Senior League Cup with an imperious display from both players and management.

Following incessant rain during the preceding week this game was moved from Fleetlands home to Bridgemary School's 3G.

Fleetlands, currently 3rd in the HPFL Senior Division (with the 3rd best goals against record), sit three places and eight points ahead of the villagers who have played a game less and hold the fourth best goals conceded stats, so a tight contest was anticipated.

Just two minutes into the game any illusions that defences would dominate were dispelled. A rapid break down Fleetlands' left, involving George Callard and Terry New, earned Common a corner. Tom Richards indicated that a much-practised corner routine (courtesy of Adam and Curtis) would be used.... The skipper played the ball to the edge of the box where Sam Strange stepped over the ball for TERRY NEW to despatch a thunderous strike into the top right-hand corner of the hosts net; 0-1.
Common were working their socks off to spoil Fleetlands' set-up and, when the ball was won back, make rapier-like thrusts into the hosts defensive third.
Indeed one such move brought about Common's second after just 7 minutes; George Callard played the ball to Dave Paskins on the edge of the hosts 18-yard box. Paskins, in turn, found Terry New and his low cross was eventually stabbed home by SAM ADAMS; 0-2.
Common's work-rate was immense with the whole side putting in a huge shift and all were outstanding with, perhaps, Tom Ashton, Terry New and Adam Saunders the fulcra from which most moves emanated.
On 36 minutes (and still the hosts had not had a single shot on goal) Common deservedly scored a third which was, once again, conceived on the right involving the tremendous Callard, tireless New and terrific Richards... netted by twosome ADAMS!! 0-3
Fleetlands were using the ball well, finding their players in crisp forward movement but they couldn't breach a defensive effort which was borne of hard-work, formation, ability, determination and information provided primarily by Hall but with Sam Strange and Graham Bird chirping in.
As the half progressed Common carved further chances but the hosts had upped their game and defended well in the closing stages of the half.
At last a Fleetlands 'half-chance' but George Callard defended for his life to avoid a one-on-one. Penalty claims were waived away by an excellent referee. Half time 0-3.
The resumption was greeted by a revitalised Fleetlands working a tired-looking Common hard and with darkening skies the prospect of an end to the 'drought' was clear to see.
A move similar to two of the visitors three first half goals saw a flowing move down the hosts right flank that would indeed end the hosts 'goal-drought' and which culminated with a cross being tapped home by Andrews; 1-3.
Jarid Hixon, in the visitors goal, was busier than at any other time during the game and he dealt comfortably with difficult crosses and several shots which made their way through Common's defences. To be fair, at this stage it was all Fleetlands but Common were fighting tooth & nail (figuratively) to prevent further breaches.
However, on 65 minutes Easton struck a super shot, well-saved by Hixon, but he was beaten by EASTON's free-mick minutes later; 2-3. Nail-biting drama could well have ensued especially as Common's management replaced the effervescent attacking Paskins with defender Carl Steadman ('a curious move' thought Yours Truly) but why on earth would I doubt the Pullinger and Osborne double-act????
From the potential of last-gasp defending the visitors rallied and broke down the left from where Tom Richards cross was buried by SAM ADAMS - his fourth hat-trick of the season to date; 2-4
Woodward then came close to reducing the arrears, but Common started to look dangerous on the break again and a great volley by Paskins, showing superb technique, came crashing out off the underside of the bar. Adams then came close with a shot, but at the other end Hixon had to make a good save from his own player. He then saw a cross from the right come back off the outside of the post.
Common brought on Joe Bayles and Josh Bowerman (Sam Strange and Tom Richards) and the game, again, became much more evenly-contested.
Another home attempt went just wide, but it was Common who came through at the end - Hall again close (must work on his shooting), but then SAM ADAMS netted his fourth (a second foursome of the campaign) on the final whistle as he was played through and again finished well. FT 2-5
An outstanding Common squad display to complement the managers personal achievement; Happy Anniversary, Guv!!!

Goalscorers: Sam Adams (2); Ryan Caws

By Ian Steele

The hosts opened brightly but Common imposed themselves and enjoyed greater possession and more threat up to the edge of the box although for most of the half it was hard to see where a goal was coming from. Defensively sound, Carl Steadman, Ben Wilding, Sam Strange and Connor Gardner did a superb job protecting Jarid in Common's goal but the little that did leak through was comfortably dealt with by Hixon.
Debutant George Callard was giving the home sides left back nightmares under the lights but decent crosses did not find their target or we were too ponderous in anticipating.
Terry New, Ryan Caws and Andy Catterson were like Terriers as they controlled the midfield while Tom Ashton, despite a 'gammy leg', was skilled and fleet of foot, and not afraid to put his foot through the ball when he deemed it necessary.
As we approached half-time the deadlock was broken when another surge forward found skipper Terry New. He in turn released our leading scorer, SAM ADAMS who gleefully found the back of the net. 0-1.
Not long after we opened the goal tally, what would have been one of the best goals Common have scored in recent years just failed to materialise. Flowing, passing football from back to front saw Terry receive the ball just outside Hayling's box and a series of interchanges with Ryan Caws provided the opportunity but Ryan failed to make decent contact.... Half Time 0-1.
Common opened the second period brightly but the host were determined to level matters. Strong running forwards latched onto the few long balls that were well directed but still defensively Colden were sound and remained untroubled until Jarid mistimed a jump and the home forward just failed to find the net.
Tom Ashton had to depart to be replaced by Luke Watts but Common's 'flow' was not disturbed. Another foray forward ended with a corner for the visitors and as the ball fell into the 18 yard box an almighty scramble was ended when RYAN CAWS stroked home from 10 yards on 59 minutes. 0-2.
The home side were now 'undone' and the final 'nail' came on 67 minutes when Carl Steadman's cross was met decisively by SAM ADAMS who netted his second of the game, 13th of the season. 0-3.
Joe Bayles and Josh Bowerman were introduced by manager Adam and, despite their tender years, they slotted in comfortably and they both played a part in an amazing effort by George Callard.
A rare break forward by The Humbugs was halted and Joe played the ball to Josh who, in turn, fed George. The ball bounced up and, from wide on the right, level with the 18-yard box, Mr. Callard hit an incredible strike which beat the home keeper but hit the junction of crossbar and post..... Full Time 0-3

An excellent performance and result from a hastily arranged fixture which affected player availability. However, the squad Adam selected performed excellently especially the threefold 16-year-old contingent who were all up to the task. A mention here also to Alex Wilson who was not used off the bench but when Adam explained his reason's Alex said 'That's ok, it's a pleasure just to be here and to watch.' What an attitude!

COMMON 3 - 0 Upham

14.09.2019 - Hampshire Premier Senior Cup

Goalscorers: Sam Adams (3)

By Ian Steele

SAM ADAMS took his tally of goals for the season to eleven with a quickfire hat-trick in seven first-half minutes but, on the down side, last season's leading Common scorer, Dave Paskins, hit the post from the penalty spot and in 'kicking himself' he suffered an ankle injury which saw him leave the arena to be replaced by Luke Watts for his first foray this season, welcome back Wattsy!

The second half was almost a 'stand-off' as Upham were determined not to concede further goals and Common, for their part, tried to conserve energy for the midweek trip to Hayling United.

With some SIX players missing primarily through injury, Adam Pullinger included within his Common squad two 16-year-olds as we looked to put an end to a run of successive losses.

Ultimately, goals from Sam Adams (2) - he only nets 'braces', last season's leading scorer Dave Paskins (2) and Tom Ashton, secured a 5-2 defeat of our hosts.

Common lined up as follows:- Cameron Vernon; Kieron Rawlings, Lawson Bright, Andy Cattison, Graham Bird; Tom Ashton, Tom Richards (Capt), Terry New, Adam Saunders; Sam Adams, Dave Paskins; Subs - Lauke Maurin (on for Sam Adams, 74), George Bishop (on for Terry New, 70), Ryan Caws (on for Lawson Bright 67) and Carl Steadman

Liphook, as they always are, were strong right from the off looking to release their dangerous strikers within our penalty area but, in front of a large crowd, Cameron Vernon was commanding and well-supported by his back line in which Lawson Bright was making his first (and I have to say, impressive) Common start.

The opening 20 minutes saw the two sides take time to settle but the hosts were more dominant without causing 'Birdy', Andy Cattison and Tom Ashton, alongside Lawson, any real issues.

Common broke well and from one of an increasing number of flowing moves Graham Bird met the effervescent Terry New's cross in front of goal and the ball seemed destined for the net. The header was downward but subsequently bounced over the bar!!

That inspired the visitors and with Kieron Rawlings and Tom Ashton prompting down the flank's, Adam Saunders in control of the middle, Tom Richard's excellent ball-winning and distribution and Dave Paskins tireless and rewarding endeavour Colden looked to take the upper hand. Sam Adams was a constant target but only after spells of possession football which saw Liphook scratching their heads although their work rate and intent was purposeful.

Common took the lead after some 42 minutes when another flowing move saw Dave Paskins attempt to strike the ball in the box but mis-kicked and it fell to SAM ADAMS who swept the ball home. 0-1

Unfortunately, from a Colden perspective, Liphook levelled almost immediately after a series of defensive errors allowed the ball to be crossed from the right and a home forward stabbed it home. 1-1 Half time.

The late equaliser spurred the home side and for 7 to ten minutes they were the dominant force after the game re-started. Common clearances and passes seemed always to find an opponent but, despite dominating the ball Cameron, in Colden's goal, was rarely troubled thanks to excellent defensive cover.

The visitors worked their way back into the game inspired by Terry New. His skill, ability, desire and determination seeking to disrupt our hosts all over the park was genuinely uplifting.

Sam Adams worked, as always, for the benefit of the team and, in harness with Dave Paskins, was proving a real thorn for the home defence and, after another well-constructed move, Common took the lead again when SAM ADAMS took Paskins pass in his stride and fired home from some 15 yards. 1-2

Common then capitalised on considerable uncertainty within Liphook's defence to net two further goals (Dave Paskins, 60 and Tom Ashton, 68 minutes) to secure a 4-1 advantage.

However, Liphook's response was a perfectly placed shot from a dubious free-kick some 20 yards out, 2-4.

Common responded with Luke Maurin, George Bishop and Ryan Caws coming on and the change was seamless as chances were still created. Indeed it was a combination of Ryan Caws and Dave Paskins that produced the final goal of the game - Caws crossed for PASKINS to leap like a Salmon and send his header over the home keeper and into the net, 2-5.

An excellent performance from Adam's and Curtis's side that saw us enjoy that winning feeling once again.

Also when you consider that we started with a sixteen-year-old and brought another one on from the bench it made the victory even sweeter.

In our fifth and final preparation match we tested ourselves against our friends at Alresford Town, from the Wessex Premier League. We experimented with a new shape and strategy; and executed the game-plan well.  But ultimately the Southampton Senior Cup winners showed their class, keeping the ball for long periods and took their chances well.  Sam Adams the scorer for us, using his pace to capitalise on the unsuspecting defender and keeper.

**We were fortunate on this occasion to have the outstanding photographer Paul Paxford in attendance.  His magnificent work, showing Oakwood Park in its summer glory can be viewed using the link below:
